Shearer and Jones...

Surely Labour need a leadership team like David Shearer and Shane Jones. Both men have "broken ranks" and  acknowledged Labour's poor performance and the fact, yes fact, that Labour used the wrong recipe. The party needs to rebuild, rebrand and renergise and Shearer and Jones seem to be the only ones who aren't shying away from admitting this. Parker and Robertson are spinning, quite poorly too, the result. Cunliffe is neither here nor there, but he's a damn sight better than the Parker/Robertson duo. Grant Robertson, as one of the campaign architects, should be taking a long hard look at himself, his plan and his team. Do Labour really want a man who, although not single handedly, took the party to a historic defeat? Hardly leadership material if you ask me. And Parker? He doesn't set the world on fire. He is a weak debater and together with Robertson they are just too "Wellington". Too geeky, too inside, not enough cross section appeal. Cunliffe and Mahuta are my clear second choice, but Mahuta doesn't always come across well on TV. She does confrontational stuff very well, but I think she'll have trouble with soft media.

  1. Grant was the campaign spokesperson, Trevor Mallard and Goff are the ones who should take responsibility for the defeat. I think Grant is one of the shining stars, increasing his majority in Wellington Central and he hasn't said he would be on a Parker ticket.

In my opinion, although it may be unrealistic, Labour should put Grant as leader and Jacinda Ardern as deputy. That would show rejuvenation, a new generation of Labour and I think they could run an inspiring campaign.

  2. Robertson directs strategy (as he did in the last Labour government). Labour doesn't do much without Robertson's approval actually. Personally, I think his star is burning out. Health Minister Tony Ryall was almost left to his own devices while Robertson stood silent and this defeat tops a poor year for Grant. Everyone was expecting more. This aside though, I agree with the Ardern combo. Maybe even have Adern at the front.

  3. Agreed Morgan, Robertson's failure to land any credible blows on Ryall is the great unspoken secret among those who promote him as Labour's Bright Shining Star.

Granted Ryall is one of the government's more competent members but Health is usually a weeping sore for almost all governments regardless of ideology; Tony Ryall is probably the most relaxed Health Minister since the 1970s.
